The VDF Special Interest Group provides a regular forum for Visual DataFlex interest in the UK. It covers Windows and web application development with Visual DataFlex and anything related to it.

Visual DataFlex
VDF is one of the most effective database application development systems you can find.
Come to our SIG meetings and find out why.

VDF October seminar meeting round up now available
The VDF Special Interest Group is where UK VDF developers can get together to exchange ideas and get the latest information on Visual DataFlex from both UK and top level Data Access sources.
Occasionally Data Access joins forces with us to provide a two day event, with VDF Training followed by a seminar day covering current topics of interest.
After each meeting, a summary of each of the meeting topics is posted on the VDF SIG web site. These include available presentations and occasionally, working source code downloads.
See below for an overall summary of the topics, with links to the details.
VDF Introductory Training
A free VDF Introductory Training session is being offered on Monday November 3rd, at our premises near Huntingdon. See our VDF Free Training page for details
Codejock Classes Introduction
Following the enthusiasm with which the Codejock Framework was received at the seminar, we have changed the afternoon timetable of the free training session to include an introduction to the Codejock Classesi. While not a full hands on training session, this should acquaint you with the potential these have, and where to find them for use in your own development

Visual DataFlex Seminar Oct 1st 2008
As in October 2007, The UK VDF SIG joined forces with Data Access Europe to present two days of Visual Dataflex topics at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre.
Summary
As well as a look at the next, VDF 2008 v14.1, release, the seminar day itself took on a theme of moving forward from older - "legacy" systems, ranging from general updating topics, through using Server Databases, to VDF and Web application development.
Again with something of a "legacy updating" flavour, Eddy Kleinjan from Data Access Europe ran through the features and benefits of using the "Express" verions of the server databases. These provide easy to implement and very low cost to buy server database capabilities to replace the obsolete - indeed "legacy" shared file database that the native DataFlex database is.
Remember, DataFlex has not been primarily a "database" for some years now, it is, par excellence, bout applicaiton development for any database. For anyone who has been around since the start of the relational database era, the thought of having the power of IBMs DB2 on the desktop, let alone for free is mind boggling! Even though most will opt for MS SQl Server Express.
The VDF development focussed on the rapidly expanding capability for enhancing the look and feel of Visual Dataflex desktop applications using the Codejock framework developed in the UK by some VDF SIG members. Harm Wieber from Data Access also demonstrated how to build a browser control into a VDF application, and moved on to showing how to use and interact with Google Maps, again within a VDF desktop application.
Web application development provided an update on the AJAX Framework project. While this is currently impressive in its capacity to build properly interactive Web applications, Version 2 of the framework, plus the goals of next generation WebApp Server development to provide visual modelling of Web applications are very significant.
A session on Electos, the VDF WebApp Server based Website Content Management System (CMS) was featured based around a very ambitions "Directorate" level website that the Heart of England NHS Trust is developing. With a potentially very complex structure covering all departments in all hospitals within this very large Trust, some tight functional requirements, and some neat ideas from its developer, this is Electos as you havent seen it before!
Dynamic AI, the Business Intelligence tool ideally suited to use in tyical Visual DataFlex application scenarios has been enhanced to allow for building in of its reporting and business graphics output directly into applications. This can provide live access to context controlled data summaries at the press of a button. We have done this for our main admin application, and it is a powerful addition to any data handling application.
Next Meeting
Provisionally the last Saturday of March 2009, but "watch this space"
